Five charged in social disorder operation

The Calgary Police Service District 8 Office has charged five individuals in relation to an ongoing operation addressing social disorder and criminal complaints in the city’s south end.

The operation initially began in 2013 following public concern in and around the Shawnessy Shopping Centre. This phase of the operation concluded in June 2013 with nine charges laid and 75 summonses issued.

A second phase of the operation began in April 2014. To date, this phase has resulted in a number of drug and theft related charges laid against five Calgary teens. From the beginning of January to the end of March 2014, CPS received 95 calls for service relating to social disorder around the Shawnessy Shopping Centre. In the three month period following the launch of the second phase, CPS received only 57 calls for service relating to social disorder in the same area.
