City of Calgary Announces New City Manager

Calgary — April 14, 2014 – Today, Mayor Naheed Nenshi announced City Council’s decision to hire Jeff Fielding as the new City Manager. Mr. Fielding was identified as a candidate as part of an international search to fill the position; he will begin his role with The City of Calgary on Monday June 2, 2014.

“It was important we cast a wide net to find the best person to lead this organization. Council and I are very pleased to find such a qualified candidate in Jeff Fielding,” said Mayor Nenshi.  “His public service experience, including a history working for The City of Calgary and his citizen-focused approach will serve The City of Calgary, and Calgarians, well.”

Jeff Fielding is a seasoned municipal administrator who has brought innovation and excellence to municipalities across Canada since beginning his work in municipal government in 1978.   Currently, Mr. Fielding is the City Manager of the City of Burlington having held that position since January 2012. Prior to that, he was City Manager with the City of London for nearly eight years. In London, he led a team that successfully built a sustainable and fiscally responsible public service business, and was recognized for his role in establishing a strong, supportive workplace culture.

Mr. Fielding received graduate and undergraduate degrees in urban geography and urban planning from the University of Waterloo. Following his graduation, he moved to Alberta to begin a career in regional and city planning.  Mr. Fielding has worked in regional planning in Grande Prairie and Edmonton, and for municipal government in Winnipeg, Calgary, Kitchener and London in a variety of managerial and corporate positions.   In Kitchener, he was Chief Administrative Officer, and before that a manager in Development and Building Approvals in Calgary.  In Calgary he also served for a time as an acting executive officer where he was responsible for Protective Services, Community and Social Services, and Parks and Recreation.

"I am excited and honoured to be chosen to lead an exceptional organization in a world-class city,” said Mr. Fielding.  “I have always been drawn to Calgary because of its vibrancy but I was drawn to this role based on the direction The City is taking,” he said.  “I’m looking forward to working with Administration to support the Mayor and Council.  Together we’ll continue to deliver the daily services Calgarians need and prepare to meet their expectations for the future.”

Mayor Nenshi and Councillors Shane Keating and Ward Sutherland participated in the search process with support from global executive search firm Boyden.
