City launches travel survey to determine future transportation needs

CALGARY  – The City of Calgary has launched a continuous survey, called My Travel Log, to gather information on how our transportation system is being used.  Knowing how, when and why people travel helps transportation planners identify travel patterns and trends, and forecast future travel demand.

“The survey will give us a better understanding of how Calgarians travel in and around the city. The results will help us more accurately anticipate future transportation needs and plan accordingly,” said Shane LeBouthillier, Project Manager at The City’s Transportation Department. “Regardless of how you travel in and around Calgary, we would like to hear from you.”

Throughout the year, households in Calgary, Rocky View County, Wheatland County, and the Municipal District (MD) of Foothills will be randomly selected to participate. Selected households will receive information about the study and an invitation to participate in the mail.

In the past, this travel data was gathered every 10 years through the Calgary and Region Household Activity Survey. By doing a continuous survey, The City will be able to monitor and measure the progress of long-term plans such as the 60-year Calgary Transportation Plan more effectively. The data gathered is used to help improve forecasts of travel demand on Calgary’s transportation network, update the Calgary Regional Transportation Model, and helps inform transportation infrastructure and funding priorities.
