Calgary Fire Department reminds Calgarians river safety advisory still in effect

The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind Calgarians that a river safety advisory for both the Bow and Elbow rivers is still in effect.

The water level of both rivers has decreased, allowing the Calgary Fire Department to remove the high streamflow advisory. However, the Fire Department still recommends all river users think carefully when considering going on the water.

“With lower water levels and our hot summer days we know it may be tempting to head out on one of our rivers,” said Calgary Fire Department Public Information Officer Carol Henke. “But we continue to caution Calgarians on their use of the rivers as dangers are still present.”

Dangers created by debris and the changed river flow as a result of the 2013 flood are still present. The many restoration projects that are underway along the rivers may also present hazards.

To see some of those risks, a video is available showing many river hazards caused by the 2013 flood at www.calgary.ca/fire.

The Fire Department reminds river users to always exercise caution when going on the city’s rivers and lakes. The Fire Department and its Partners in River Safety (Calgary Police Service and Animal & Bylaw Services) advise all river users to make themselves aware of water levels, temperature, current, visibility and hazards in and around the water, that can catch, trap or overturn vessels. Anyone considering using Calgary’s rivers is encouraged to always be cautious and to scout, assess and decide from shore before going on the water.

The Partners in River Safety want to ensure everyone safely and respectfully enjoys the city’s waterways this summer.
