Calgary Fire Department honours brave citizens and firefighters

Twelve citizens and four Calgary firefighters were honoured by the Calgary Fire Department today at the Recognition Luncheon, thanking them for their outstanding bravery for saving a woman from drowning in the Bow River, rescuing a woman from a car fire, providing CPR to a victim of a motor vehicle collision and more.

Calgary Fire Chief Ken Uzeloc presented the 16 courageous Calgarians with coins, a Medal of Bravery or certificates in recognition of their heroic actions, helping others at an emergency situation attended by the Fire Department.

“Calgarians are famous for helping out, as we genuinely care about each other,” said Deputy Mayor Jim Stevenson. “Today’s recipients, who we are celebrating today, have taken caring for others to new heights. They have gone above and beyond, and in some cases, put themselves in danger to help those in need.”

Among the award recipients are City of Calgary Transit Officers D’Arcy Hare and Ian (Bob) Hope. They were recognized with a Medal of Bravery for rescuing a woman they spotted in distress in the Bow River in Feb. 2014.

“Not all people have the wherewithal to respond and jump into an emergency situation to help others,” said Fire Chief Uzeloc.  “This is why these recipients are so special, and why I am so proud to thank these Calgarians and recognize them for true acts of bravery.”

Other courageous acts recognized by the Fire Department included golfer Josh Gardner, who rescued a man from a car which had crashed into a water hazard at a Calgary golf course; and two off-duty Calgary firefighters who assisted at a multi-vehicle incident.

All of the individuals honoured today were nominated by members of the Fire Department and were reviewed by the Fire Department’s Recognition Committee. Recipients were recognized in one of three categories: appreciation, recognition or commendation. Recipients recognized in the commendation category received a Calgary Fire Department Medal of Bravery.
