Calgary Fire Department discovers high carbon monoxide levels at north west hotel

Just before 11:30 this morning, the Calgary Fire Department was called to a hotel at the 2200 block of Banff Trail N.W. for a fire alarm. On arrival, fire crews entered the building to investigate and discovered carbon monoxide levels throughout the hotel, peaking in the boiler room at over 370 ppm (parts per million). Upon further investigation, firefighters found levels of 10-15 ppm in guest suites and up to 30 ppm in the pool area. Approximately 20 guests and staff were evacuated from the hotel. ATCO gas was also called to the hotel and together with fire crews, determined the cause of the CO to be the boiler which heats the pool water. Fire crews ventilated the hotel and people were allowed to re-enter once CO levels reached zero. The boiler will remain out of service until appropriate repairs are completed. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.
