Multiple people in custody in relation to shooting investigation

The Calgary Police Service Specialized Offender Unit continues to investigate a shooting after a teen was left at a local hospital with serious injuries.

At approximately 10:40 p.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, a 19-year-old male was dropped off at a hospital suffering from gunshot wounds. The vehicle and occupants left the victim at the hospital and fled.

Officers located the vehicle a short time later in the 500 block of Abadan Place N.E. It was unoccupied at the time. Information led officers to a nearby restaurant where three people believed to be connected to the investigation were located. All three individuals fled police.

A foot chase ensued, resulting in two of the three people being taken into custody. At the time of their arrest, they were carrying a backpack containing drugs and a handgun. The two suspects, both men in their 20s, were taken into custody for questioning in relation to the shooting. Both are facing charges in relation to the drugs and handgun. Their names will be released once charges have been formally laid.

The third individual who initially fled police, a man in his 20s, was later found at a residence and taken into custody without further incident. He is currently facing charges in relation to breach of a recognizance. His name will be released once he has seen a Justice of the Peace.

Following these arrests, a suspicious vehicle was located by patrol officers. The vehicle is believed to be connected to the investigation and all three occupants were taken into custody for questioning, however, it is not yet known what, if any, role any of the individuals played in the shooting and they are not currently facing charges.

The victim has been upgraded to serious but stable condition.

Investigators believe the shooting was not random in nature, although the specific motive is still not known at this time. Officers are working to determine the exact time and location the shooting took place, as well as what involvement, if any, the men taken into custody may have had.
