Man dies following fatal assault at Calgary Remand

A man who was assaulted at the Calgary Remand Centre earlier this month has died.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, EMS and the Calgary Fire Department were called to the Calgary Remand Centre, 12200 85 Street N.W., for reports of an inmate in medical distress. Upon arrival, the victim was located in life-threatening condition and was resuscitated by EMS and CFD personnel before being transported to hospital.

Police were called and took the victim’s cellmate into custody.

On Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, the victim of the assault was taken off life support.

He has been identified as Alvin Clifford CHINIQUAY, 40. An autopsy is expected to take place to determine cause of death. The date for the autopsy has not been set.

It is not yet known what prompted the assault. An investigation by the CPS Homicide Unit will continue, however, charges are expected to be laid against the man’s cellmate. His name will be released once charges have been formally laid by a Justice of the Peace.

There have been 20 homicides in Calgary in 2016.
