Man charged in serious stabbing incident

The Calgary Police Service has charged a man in relation to a serious stabbing that occurred at the Drop-In Centre yesterday.

Just after 11 a.m., on Monday, May 15, 2017, police were called to 1 Dermot Baldwin Way S.E., for reports that a man had been stabbed while inside the entrance of the Drop-In Centre. After the attack, the man fled towards the north side of the river.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital in serious condition, where he was later upgraded to stable condition.

A nearby member of the Canine Unit, with assistance from patrol officers, arrested the man at approximately 11:15 a.m., in the 700 block of McDougall Court N.E. The alleged weapon used during the assault was recovered at the time of arrest.

At the time of arrest the suspect requested medical assistance as he alleged had been exposed to pepper spray. It is believed the suspect pepper sprayed the victim during the attack and suffered side effects as a result. He was treated at the scene before being transported to the CPS Arrest Processing Section.

The motive of the attack is not yet known. The investigation into the circumstances and the relationship between the victim and the suspect continues. 

The CPS would like to thank security staff at the Drop-In Centre for providing timely and accurate description information that enabled officers to identify, track, and quickly arrest the suspect in this case.

Cordelius Terry Jackson HARRISON, 27, of Calgary, is charged with one count each of aggravated assault, possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, unlawfully cause bodily harm, causing a disturbance, and three counts of failure to comply with condition of a recognizance. HARRISON will next appear in court on Wednesday, May 17, 2017.
