Man charged following fatal assault

The Calgary Police Service has charged a man following a fatal assault that occurred last month.

On Friday, Sept. 21, 2018, at approximately 11:40 p.m., police were called to a shelter, located at 1 Dermot Baldwin Way S.E., for reports that a serious assault had occurred. The victim was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. One man was taken into custody from the scene.

At the time, the Centralized General Investigations Unit charged Tyler Scott Ryan LINDSAY, 36, of no-fixed-address with one count of aggravated assault.

It is unknown if the victim and the offender were known to each other. The motive remains unknown. Officers are not looking for any additional suspects.

Today, Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018, the victim succumbed to his injuries and detectives from the Homicide Unit have taken over the investigation. An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 5, 2018, by The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, however he has been identified as Vinh Duc CHUNG, 63.

It is anticipated that LINDSAY’s charge will be upgraded to second-degree murder when he next appears in court on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018.

This is Calgary’s 12th homicide of 2018.
