Last weekend to drop off your real Christmas tree for recycling

Over 20,000 Christmas trees have been collected so far and there’s still time to make sure your tree doesn’t go to waste. This is the last weekend to drop off your tree before the Christmas Tree Recycling program wraps up on January 31.

“We want to thank Calgarians for embracing the change from door-to-door collection to a drop-off only Christmas tree program,” says Sharon Howland, Leader, Program Management at Waste & Recycling Services. “We are on track to collect nearly as many trees as last year, and your support has helped us save taxpayers an estimated $100,000, while keeping these trees out of the landfill.”

There are 16 drop-off locations around the city:

How to prepare your real tree for recycling

  • Remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, and tree stands so tree is bare.
  • If bagging your tree in your vehicle, please remove the bag/cover from the tree at the drop-off.
  • Christmas wreaths and boughs without any decorations or metal hooks are also acceptable for drop-off.

The mulch from recycled Christmas trees will be available for free to residents at the East Calgary landfill. Mulch is available while supplies last.
