Flood Mitigation Measures: Involving the Community

Citizen workshops begin today to gather input on proposed flood mitigation measures. Since the 2013 floods, City teams have been conducting a number of conceptual and technical studies, as well as in-depth reviews to better understand our water ways, flood risks, changes to the river patterns and land use policies. Throughout October and November, workshops and open houses will give citizens from across the city the opportunity to provide their candid feedback and thoughts on these studies and concepts.

“It’s important to us to hear citizens’ comments and opinions first hand” says Frank Frigo, The City’s Leader of River Engineering. “Building resiliency to flooding is a top priority and because flood mitigation decisions may affect the way communities look, function, and feel, we want to involve our community members as much as possible.”

A key piece of the Flood Mitigation Measures Assessment Project is citizen engagement. Information gathered at the public events, combined with several other inputs will inform recommendations, regarding which mitigation scenarios The City should continue to pursue. Recommendations will be brought to Council in early 2017, with further citizen engagement to follow.
