Calgary Fire Department battles early morning apartment fire

UPDATE ON CAUSE OF EARLY MORNING FIRE

The Calgary Fire Department  have completed their investigation, and have concluded that improper  disposal of smoking materials in a planter containing peat moss, resulted in the fire earlier this morning. Please use caution when disposing of smoking materials.

At approximately 05:15 this morning the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded to a building fire at 366 94 Ave SE. Upon arrival at the three story walk up building, crews encountered two full involved wooden balconies. Members from the CFD started an aggressive exterior attack as well as ensuring that the building occupants were exiting the building. Once the initial fire was knocked down from the outside, crews entered the involved apartments to extinguish any extension into the adjacent rooms. Upon entry it was discovered that the fire had started to spread into the roof above the third story balcony. This fire spread was stopped by utilizing a master stream from an Aerial set up at the rear of the building. There is extensive fire and water damage to the involved apartments. At the present time crews remain on scene over hauling the building to confirm that the fire is out. Once it’s determined that the building is safe, occupants will be allowed back into their homes. There were no injuries and the investigation into the cause will commence once the over haul is completed.
