Charges laid after Calgary Police Service badge and phone stolen

The Calgary Police Service has charged a man following an investigation into a break and enter where a police badge and phone were stolen from a police officer’s home.

At approximately 7 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 23, 2018, an off-duty Calgary Police Service member was at home in the community of Cambrian Heights. When the member went upstairs for a few minutes, someone entered the house through the front door and stole several valuable items, including the member’s CPS-issued cell phone and his badge.

The suspect then fled the residence in a vehicle stolen using keys taken from inside the home.

Police tracked the location of the missing phone to the 0-100 block of Hendon Drive N.W., in the community of Highwood. The stolen vehicle was parked on the street with the CPS cell phone and many of the other stolen items inside. Around the same time, another break and enter was reported nearby in the 900 block of 39 Avenue N.W., by a homeowner who was in the residence at the time.

Officers tracked the suspect from the second break and enter using a canine and footprints in the snow, and arrested him at a residence in the 0-100 block of Harlow Avenue N.W. It is believed the same man is also responsible for other break and enters reported in the area.

The break and enters all appear to have been random.

Travis Thunderchild WHITEQUILLS, 18, of Calgary, is charged with four counts of break and enter, one count of motor vehicle theft, five counts of theft under $5,000, six counts of breaching a court order, and one count of possession of stolen property.

Many of the stolen items were recovered, however, police have not recovered the stolen badge. Investigators conducted an extensive search of the area and have been working to locate the badge, but it has not yet been found.

If a member of the public is approached by a non-uniformed police officer, the Calgary Police Service encourages them to ask for photo identification in addition to a badge. Non-uniformed officers are required to carry picture ID and a badge at all time and citizens have the right to ask for that identification.

Citizens can also ask for an officer’s last name and call 403-266-1234 to confirm that they are dealing with a real police officer, if something about the situation is suspicious.
