Calgary Named Member of 100 Resilient Cities Network

Calgary, Alberta – The City of Calgary has officially been awarded membership to a group of global cities by 100 Resilient Cities – Pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation (100RC). Calgary is among the final cohort of cities invited to join the worldwide 100RC Network.

The achievement brings funding and resources to support and unify current projects and initiatives focused on preparing for and recovering from future environmental, social and economic disruptions.

"As we’ve seen over the past few years, Calgary is a resilient city,” says Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “Whether we are responding to the floods of 2013, adapting to the economic downturn, or taking in refugees and evacuees, we have shown the very best of ourselves. We applied to be a member of this network because we know we can become even better. This membership gives us access to some of the leading professional knowledge, analytical tools, planning expertise, and implementation services available in the world. What we learn through our participation in this network will translate into an even more resilient city for our citizens.”

Benefits of membership into the 100RC Network of cities includes a grant to fund a Chief Resilience Officer for up to two years, technical support and access to about 60 private and public sector tools and services to develop and implement a resiliency strategy. It also brings the opportunity to share knowledge and best practices with other members, and then share knowledge with other municipalities facing similar challenges.

The 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) Network was launched in 2013 to enable 100 cities across the globe to better address the increasing incidents of acute shocks and chronic stresses being faced in the 21st century.

Acute shocks are sharp, sudden events that threaten or damage a city like flood, earthquake, disease outbreaks or terrorist/cyber attacks. Chronic stresses weaken the fabric of a city with on-going or cyclical events such as unemployment, endemic violence or chronic food/water shortages.

Today marks the third and final round of applicant selection into the 100RC Network. Calgary is one of four Canadian cities chosen to participate – Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal are also members of the network.

We join a diverse group of cities such as Mexico City, Mexico; Amman, Jordan; New York City, USA; Accra, Ghana; Chennai, India; and Bangkok, Thailand.
