Calgary Fire Department Responds to Highrise Building Fire

This evening at approximately 9:30 the Calgary Fire Department responded to multiple reports of flames showing on a balcony of a high rise building located in the 8000 block of Horton Rd. S.W. First arriving crews were met with visible flame and smoke coming from a balcony on the ninth floor of a multi story residential building.

Fire crews worked to safely evacuate residents in proximity to the fire floor while an aggressive fire attack was made on the fire suite. Evacuated residents were safely housed in buses provided by Calgary Transit.

Because of installed sprinklers, the damage was kept to a minimum in the suite itself while the balcony suffered extensive damage.

Calgary Fire Investigators are on scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire.

Fire crews continue to monitor the air quality throughout the building to allow residents on certain floors to occupy their suites.

The Calgary Fire Department is pleased that there were no reported injuries and would like to thank Calgary Police Services, Calgary Transit and Alberta Health Services for their assistance.
