Calgary Fire Department responds to apartment fire in Forest Lawn

Shortly before 1:00 this morning the Calgary Fire Department responded to the 1700 block of 42 St SE for reports of a building fire. Arriving crews entered the 4 story residential apartment building and found “moderate” smoke on the 4th floor. Upon further investigation fire crews located a small fire in the living room of a 4th floor apartment. The fire was quickly extinguished while the apartment was searched for occupants. The suite was unoccupied however; two pet cats were located and rescued by fire crews. The two residents of the affected suite self evacuated prior to CFD’s arrival. Thankfully, neither was injured. Approximately 80 additional residents were temporarily evacuated while firefighters removed smoke and checked for fire extension. All residents, but those from the affected suite, were given the “all clear” at approximately 1:45 AM and allowed to return to their suites. No injuries were reported. The pet cats are fine and have been reunited with their owners. Damage to the suite is considered minor/moderate. Fire Investigators are on scene. Traffic in the area is unaffected at this time.
