Calgary Fire Department extinguishes basement fire in Queensland

At approximately 4:20 this morning, the Calgary Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire in the 200 block of Queensland Downs SE. Upon arrival, fire crews were met with smoke and flames visible from the middle unit of a town house. Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack, proceeding to the basement, knocking the fire down and containing the fire to the suite of origin.

One cat was found alive during the primary search and returned the unit occupants. The source unit occupants had self evacuated prior to Calgary Fire Department arrival, being awoken by a working smoke alarm. Three other units with a total of seven people were evacuated as a precaution due to the smoke generated from the source unit.

High capacity fans were used to remove smoke from one of the adjoining suites. Crews remain at the incident searching for hot spots and possible fire extension. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident and the fire is still under investigation.

The Calgary Fire Department would like remind citizens that functioning smoke alarms can help save lives.
