Calgary fire crews respond to southeast house fire

At approximately 11:10 this morning on August 19th, a resident on Deer Run Crescent S.E. saw smoke coming from a home nearby and called 9-1-1. Responding fire crews could see dark smoke from the distance and made the tactical decision to approach the house from a different route in order to hook up to the closest hydrant as the next closest engine would be minutes away. When firefighters entered the home, they encountered heavy smoke and flames on the top floor of the split level home.

No occupants were in the home at the time of the fire however a cat was taken from the home and CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) was performed by firefighters to try and save it. Unfortunately the cat succumbed to its injuries sustained as a result of the fire.

Fire crews quickly knocked down the fire preventing spread to any neighbouring structures. The home was equipped with working smoke alarms which firefighters could hear beeping as they entered the house. Damage to the residence is significant with structural damage to the roof where the fire burned through. Most of the rest of the house sustained smoke damage.

A fire investigator is on scene to determine the origin and cause of this fire. Anybody with photos or video of the fire especially prior to CFD arrival on scene can email them to piofire@calgary.ca
