Calgary fire crews battle two alarm fire at Sunalta construction site

At approximately 7:35 Monday evening, 9-1-1 started receiving multiple calls regarding a large fire at a multi story residential construction site at 16th Avenue and 16th Street S.W. One caller stated the flames were reaching 100 feet in the air and another caller indicated that the fire was threatening apartment buildings next door.

When fire crews arrived on scene, a second alarm was immediately called for additional resources due to the volume of fire. The source building which was fully involved, had already started to partially collapse shortly after CFD arrival. Fire had also spread to the apartments on either side.

The fire was brought under control before 9:00 p.m. and fire crews continue to put out hot spots. Fire watch will be maintained throughout the night.

One female was treated by EMS for injures but not transported to hospital and one dog was rescued out of one of the neighbouring apartments by firefighters. No other injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

The source building has been completely destroyed by the fire and the neighbouring apartment buildings containing approximately a dozen units each, sustained significant damage. Residents of these buildings will be displaced for some time until repairs can be made.

If anybody was in the area and has any information, photos or video of the fire especially prior to CFD arrival on scene, please email piofire@calgary.ca

Any information will be passed on to the fire investigators in order to determine the exact origin and cause of this fire.
