Calgary fire crews battle three alarm fire in northeast community of Cityscape

At approximately 3:00 this morning, 9-1-1 received multiple calls for reports of a building fire in the new northeast community of Cityscape. When fire crews arrived, one house which had been under construction, was so consumed by fire, it had already collapsed and the fire had spread to the roof and second story of two neighbouring homes.

The fire was upgraded to a third alarm to ensure adequate resources and firefighters due to the increased challenges of cold weather firefighting. Approximately 60 residents from 12 homes were evacuated by the Calgary Police Service (CPS). CPS also supported CFD firefighting efforts by diverting traffic around the incident scene.

No injuries were reported as a result of this fire. One house under construction was completely destroyed and two neighbouring homes sustained significant damage. Six other homes had exterior damage as a result of the radiant heat from the fire.

A Calgary Transit bus was brought to the scene to shelter residents however all had found alternative accommodations or left the scene and the bus was then used to rehabilitate firefighters.

The fire was declared under control at 6:00 this morning. Firefighters continue to put out hotspots and will remain on scene all day. A Calgary Fire Department fire investigator is at the scene to determine the origin and cause of this fire.

Information, photos and videos of the fire, especially prior to CFD arrival, are welcome and can be emailed directly to Carol Henke with CFD at piofire@calgary.ca
