9-hole sneak peak of 18 holes at McCall Lake golf course opens May 17

Golfers will be able to enjoy the McCall Lake Golf Course again this year.

Embedded in the communities of McCall and North and South Airways since 1981, McCall Lake Golf Course has been an integral part of Calgary Recreation’s mandate to enrich the lives of Calgarians and improve the quality of life in our city by creating active, vibrant and healthy families.

This 18-hole golf course has been undergoing renovations since 2018 to revitalize the course to modern design standards and to make it more enjoyable to play and accessible to a wider variety of players. A 9-hole sneak-peak preview on the 18-hole golf course will open May 17 and the remainder of the holes will reopen later in June.Avid golfers looking to test their skills will need to get their thinking cap on as strategic shot-making opportunities await. For recreational players simply looking to have fun or improve their skills, new tee options and relocated hazards will make it easier and more rewarding to play.

“Over McCall Lake’s lifespan, golf course design, equipment and player needs have evolved,” says Lisa Lanctot, business development coordinator, Calgary Recreation. “The local golf market has changed, plus there’s normal wear and tear on features over time. Ultimately, this combination impacted the course’s playability and market position as a prime golf option for Calgarians. To renew the great potential of McCall’s 18-hole course, an update to modern design standards was needed.”

The $6.7 million project includes numerous upgrades to greens, tees and fairways. As part of the new modern classic design, golfers will find enhanced parkland character with more planting around the perimeter. Relocation of traps and hazards match today’s driving distances and make for a more interesting game. The addition of new forward tees will accommodate a broader range of skill levels.

“The course occupies a fantastic area,” says Designer Wade Horrocks of Ground3 Landscape Architecture. “The property has generous playing corridors, mature parkland character, abundant water features and subtle elevation changes. We built on those strengths and applied them to the modern game. This type of course design emphasizes strategy and player enjoyment over difficulty and challenge. It is notable for producing some of the most exciting and interesting golf courses ever fashioned.”

The focus of municipal golf services is to provide a range of basic, affordable and publicly accessible opportunities to Calgarians of all ages and skill levels including subsidized initiatives for low income youth and families.
