2017 Election - Candidate nomination packages now available

 

 

 

Candidate nomination packages will be available starting Tuesday, June 13, 2017 for anyone choosing to run for Mayor, Councillor, and/or Public or Separate School Trustee in the 2017 Calgary Municipal Election. Nomination papers and information packages can be picked up at the Elections & Census Office, 1103 – 55 Avenue N.E., between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Digital copies of the Candidate Information Handbook and Election Bylaw book are available online at electionscalgary.ca. Nomination papers are only available in hard copy.

Candidates must file their completed nomination papers on Monday, September 18, 2017 at Council Chambers, in the Municipal Building beside historic City Hall between 9 a.m. and 12 noon. The list of candidate names running for office becomes final at noon on September 19, 2017. Until then there is no official list of candidates. Once an official list is available, it will be posted on electionscalgary.ca and will appear in the Election Brochure that is delivered to all Calgary households. All potential candidates will have the opportunity to create a candidate profile which will appear on electionscalgary.ca after official candidates are announced.

Candidates running for Mayor require 100 signatures from eligible voters living within the boundaries of the city of Calgary along with a $500 deposit. Councillors and/or Public or Separate School Trustee candidates must obtain 100 and 25 signatures respectively from eligible voters living in the ward in which they are running, plus a $100 required deposit. All deposits are payable in cash, certified cheque or money order payable to The City of Calgary.

The Advance Vote will be open from October 4 – 11, 2017 (excluding Thanksgiving, October 9) for all eligible voters. Voters can cast their ballot at any location across the city during the Advance Vote. Election Day is October 16, 2017 and if voting on this day, voters must go to their designated voting station. Advance Vote and Election Day voting locations will be announced on September 19, 2017.

In the 2017 Municipal Election, Calgary citizens will elect the Mayor, 14 Councillors, 7 Calgary Board of Education Trustees, 7 Catholic School District Trustees (each school trustee representing 2 of 14 wards).
